Public transport is an important way to get around your community and you might use buses, trains, trams, ferries or other forms of public transport to travel to work, school, appointments or social activities and events.

Having a disability can present real challenges when navigating public transport, including buying a ticket, accessing platforms or stations, getting on, moving around when onboard, stowing mobility aids, using restrooms and getting off at your destination.

Public transport providers and operators are required to meet certain standards to make public transport accessible for people with disability. The Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport covers how to ensure access paths, fare payment, boarding points, waiting areas, doorways, handrails and many other factors are accessible for people with disability using public transport. Many public transport operators also provide passes and cards that provide free or reduced travel fares.
